firmus energy Derry triathlon introduces new Club Championship Competition

The North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), organisers of the firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon 2015, have launched a Club Championship Competition into the event, which will add to the competitive level of the race for the serious triathletes. Triathlon Clubs across Ulster are invited to submit a team to compete for the prestigious title of the ‘Best Club in Ulster’.

Paul McGilloway, Race Director at NWTC, explained: “As the race has been granted National Series status by governing body Triathlon Ireland, we are keen to make this year’s triathlon as challenging and competitive as possible for serious triathletes. This club element, which I believe is the first Championship Race of its kind at a Northern Ireland triathlon, will give the firmus energy City of Derry triathlon an added boost and bring it up a level.

100 spaces available for Club teams

“We want as many Clubs as possible to enter a team, which would consist of a minimum of 10 people, including at least three female members. Teams can have as many people as a Club wishes to include but on the event day, only the 10 best scores will be taken as the Club’s Championship entry.  With fewer than 100 spaces available for Club teams, athletes better be quick off the mark to grab spots for their team as soon as possible!”

More than 500 people compete each year

The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon attracts crowds of thousands to the City.  More than 500 people compete each year in the event, which comprises a 750m open water swim in the River Foyle followed by a 20km closed road cycle and culminates in a 5km flat run that takes in key attractions around the City including the iconic Peace Bridge.

Sunday 14 June promises to be a great day

Paul added:  “As organisers, NWTC will not be competing in the Club Championship element but we want to encourage as many local Clubs as possible to form teams.  We would love to see mixed groups of all ages taking part from the Clubs to bring as wide a variety of triathletes as possible to the event.  Sunday 14 June promises to be a great day for those competing and those spectating with its great atmosphere and the stunning backdrop of the City.

“The Club team with the best scores will win the accolade of ‘Best Club in Ulster’ at the event and our ambition would be to grow this element even more for next year’s Triathlon, rolling it out on an All-Ireland basis. ”

firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon National Series Race

Angeline Murphy, from firmus energy, added: “The award of National Series to this year’s event is testament to the standard of the triathlon, making it one of the best organised and respected triathlons on the island in such a short time frame.  We are sure that there will be a lot of support from other local Clubs who will choose to put a team forward for the Championship element of the event. May the best Club win!”
