Keane & Reid take top honours in Derry Triathlon
Male winner Bryan Keane in a new course record time of 57mins 47secs and female champion, Aileen Reid, 1 minute 5 secs, powered to victory today in this year’s Triathlon Ireland 'SuperSeries'. As competitors from across Northern Ireland, Ireland and further afield took on the gruelling endurance challenge, the City welcomed thousands of spectators who turned out to cheer on the participants. Almost 400 competitors competed in the firmus energy City of Derry Sprint Triathlon course, comprising of a 750m open water swim in the River Foyle, a 20km closed road cycle and culminating in a 5km flat run around the City, some for fun with others striving for personal bests.

The overall event was won by Edward Kearney from Hi Elbow TC, who crossed the finish line with a time of 01:05:05. He was closely followed by Chirs McGuigan from Omagh Triathlon Club, who finished in 01:05:19, taking third place with a time of 01:05:44 was James Keenan from Cuilcagh Triathlon Club .

In the ladies’ category, Anne Paul from Triangle Triathlon Club came in first completing the course in 01:12:31. Rachel Hayes from Piranha Triathlon Club, got silver coming in at 01:13:14 just before Katherine Woods. Katherine from Triangle Triathlon Club, was placed third, finishing in 01:13:25.

Adrian Kelly, of the North West Triathlon Club and race director said: “Our race is part of the National Series and is a much anticipated competition. We are grateful for all the support that has been shown to us over the last three years which has helped build this event into one of the highlights of the triathlon sporting calendar. As always it has been a massive team effort and I would like to thank everyone who helped make it happen, including the committee, firmus energy, Triathlon Ireland, Foyle Search and Rescue and all our volunteers. Without them, it simply wouldn’t be possible to mount such a large-scale operation which is enjoyed by so many.”

Angeline Murphy from firmus energy added: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in this challenge – it definitely looked tough going from the sidelines but at least the weather was kind this year! The atmosphere has been great and I can see that the participants, as well as the crowds, had a fantastic time.
