The firmus energy City of Derry sprint triathlon, which will take place on Sunday 14 June, is proving to be more popular than ever this year with 300 people registering for the event in the first week. After just two years, the Derry event is quickly gaining reputation as one of best organised triathlons on the island with interest growing year on year.

Awarded National Series status

Paul Mc Gilloway from the North West Triathlon Club (NWTC), organisers of the firmus energy City of Derry triathlon, explained: “Now in its third year, we are delighted that the standard of the event has been recognised by Triathlon Ireland and has now been awarded National Series status. This is what we have been working towards for the last two years, raising the bar each time to ensure we made the cut for year three! The firmus energy City of Derry Triathlon is now one of only 27 National Series races on the island of Ireland out of the hundreds of triathlons that take place each year.

Avoid disappointment

“We expect that this is one of the main reasons for the phenomenal demand we have experienced since registration opened on 9 January and are confident that the 550 places will go in record time. We would urge those interested to sign-up straight away to avoid disappointment – this will be an event not to be missed!”

Charity fundraising

Angeline Murphy from firmus energy added: “As well as attracting professional athletes, people can take part just for fun and for personal achievement or, alternatively, competitors can opt to raise money for a charity close to their hearts.  If you wish to take part but do not have a specific charity in mind, Foyle Search and Rescue, which works to keep people safe in and around the water, is the event’s nominated charity and this voluntary organisation welcomes additional support.

“We are delighted but not surprised by the popularity of this year’s event and can’t wait to see everyone at the starting line!”

The Triathlon comprises a 750m open water swim in the River Foyle followed by a 20km closed road cycle culminating in a 5km flat run that takes in key attractions around the City including the iconic Peace Bridge and will take place on Sunday 14 June 2015.
